Sciatica and The Pain Cycle

Here is a brief overview of the pain cycle in regards to sciatica. When we have sciatica pain, it's usually because of compression in the L4-L5 disks. The reason we develop this compression in the first place is because of muscle imbalances.

When we develop a muscle imbalance, we will usually have these 3 signs: Tight Muscles, Weak Muscles, and Altered Joints.

Tight Muscles can be caused by multiple things like our posture or scar tissue, but when we get tight muscles, it will create weakness with its counterpart muscles (biceps to triceps, quads to hamstrings, chest to back etc). This out of balance relationship of tight and weak muscles will then begin to move the bones these muscles are attached to, creating altered joints.

This is why it's important to not only stretch the correct muscles, but also to exercise the right ones as well.
